The Ballarat gold mine in Victoria, south-east Australia, has reopened following the successful restoration of a key access decline, the company behind the project has confirmed.

Lihir Gold said the decline had been closed following a rock fall in November, which blocked access to underground work areas.

A remediation plan, which was drawn up in cooperation with regulatory authorities to underline the importance of recovery worker safety, has now cleared the area and normal underground operations are resuming, the company said.

It remains confident that commercial production at Ballarat, which is located about 72 miles west of Melbourne, will begin on schedule at the end of 2008.

The Ballarat region has yielded more than 12 million ounces of gold in its history and the company says it has the potential to produce 9.2 million ounces more.
