China and India's gold mining industries must focus on sustainable development if it is to succeed in the years to come, a new article states.

Business Day claims that the countries' mining firms could support economic development in their host countries if they expand in the correct manner.

"To assure their competitive advantage, companies must focus on talent management, technology innovation and sustainable development expertise that will make them partners of choice," the publication states.

Corporate social responsibility is to drive the continued success of gold mining, with companies set to be increasingly judged on their history in this field, the report asserts.

And working more closely with environmental organisations should be key to this strategy, it adds, giving firms renewed insight into ethical investment and regulatory issues.

Meanwhile, Goldcorp recently donated funds to a new sustainability research centre being built by the University of British Columbia, Mineweb reported.
