The Goa Mineral Foundation (GMF) has praised a new report on sustainable mining in the Indian state.

According to News Post India, the GMF has welcomed the State of India's Environment report published by the Centre for Science and Environment, based in New Delhi.

Calling for a strong regulatory framework to ensure that Goa gets the maximum economic benefit from mining activities carried out on its land, the publication calls for compliance mechanisms to safeguard the industry's sustainable development.

The GMF has blamed illegal mining for the industry's negative aspects and noted that the industry brings some benefits to the state.

And the report agrees that mining is necessary for economic sustainability, but needs to be monitored more strictly.

The GMF undertakes socio-economic initiatives in areas affected by mining projects.

Goa's mining industry employs some 11,000 people directly and 10,000 people in an indirect fashion, according to Mapsofindia.com.
