The gold Makutam at the top of the Swarna Kolam in Kerala is missing, it has been announced.

Officials of the Cochin Devaswom Board confirmed on February 20th that the decorative top of the Kolam had been replaced with imitation gold, reports Newindpress.com.

The missing metal weighs some 950 grams and its absence was first noticed by a group of workers removing the Kolam for repair work ahead of Para Ulsavam, which begins later this month.

An investigation has been opened with Hill Palace police station after the Cochin Devaswom Board informed the authorities of the situation.

"The gold Kolam, which was presented by the Kochi Maharaja, is decorated with invaluable gems and pearls," board member KK Mohanan told the publication.

He added that the imitation with which it was replaced was of poor quality.

Kerala is located on the Malabar coast of south-west India, with the Indian Ocean island of the Maldives located to its south.
