Traditional Mexican customs including the presentation of a set of 13 gold coins helped cancer patient Camelia Rodriguez celebrate her dream wedding, the Associated Press (AP) has reported.

The coins were given to her by the groom Jorge Estuardo, her partner of eight years, as a symbol of his support. The two were also joined by a lasso, a traditional white rope that is wrapped in a figure-of-eight around the couple's necks to signify their unity.

Workers at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, where Ms Rodriguez has been treated for the last two months with advanced breast cancer, helped to organise the ceremony at a day's notice, the news service said.

Speaking through an interpreter, Ms Rodriguez reportedly said: "God has granted me one more day of life. I am so happy."

According to the AP, the service was conducted by a Spanish-speaking priest from the La Luce de Christo church in Chelsea and the hospital's catering unit provided a wedding cake.
