Monday, 25th February 2008 (1679 views) Mining companies in Canada's Ontario have made great strides in the field of safety, it has been claimed.According to the Ontario Mining Association (OMA), the last decade has seen improvements in three common safety benchmarks. On its official website, the OMA notes that there has been a 46 per cent improvement in lost time due to injury over the last ten years, with the rate reducing to 0.7 per 200,000 hours work in 2007 compared to an equivalent rate of 1.3 in 1999. Meanwhile, a gain of 36 per cent was made in the total medical aid standard, progressing from a rate of 11 per 200,000 hours worked to 7.1 in the ten-year period. And severity witnessed an improvement of 27 per cent, with the time taken for workers to return to work reduced from 180 days to 132 days over the decade. "Credit for these stronger safety performances resides on the shoulders of every individual who works in the industry," writes the organisation. OMA members include Barrick Gold and Goldcorp.
