A second phase drill programme at the Cuiu Cuiu project in northern Brazil has been extended to a total of 7,000 metres, the exploration company behind the work has said.

Magellan Minerals said the programme had been extended to determine the extent of mineralisation from five gold-in-soil anomalies identified at the site, which covers an entire gold mining district.

Results from these anomalies - designated as Central, Pao de Marenda, Jerimum de Cima, Jerimum de Baixo and Moreira Gomes - include 16 metres of 6.4 g/t gold, eight metres of 5.0 g/t gold and 84 metres of 1.6 g/t gold.

Drilling carried out in 2006 on the Central anomaly also returned results of 13.54 g/t gold over two metres, 2.49 g/t gold over 13.9 metres and 134.5 metres of 1.10 g/t gold.

Between 1972 and 1992, the Cuiu Cuiu project was part of the largest gold rush in history, when over a million people came to northern Brazil looking to strike it rich. Between 5,000 and 10,000 miners lived and worked in the Cuiu Cuiu area during this period.
