An exhibition of family heirlooms is being held next month by the Southold Historical Society, it has been announced.

Gold jewellery and rings are among the items - known as virtu - to be displayed between March 1st and May 4th at the Ann Currie-Bell House in Southold, reports Suffolk Life.

The event will aim to bring together bric-a-brac donated by local people that feel these items have stories behind them.

According to the publication, "each generation has its own stash" of such items.

"Many are family heirlooms, like a grandfather's gold watch or a decades-old wedding ring," the report observes.

Among the other items that have been donated by residents of the area are a jewel case made of wood and ivory by 19th century whaling captain Henry Green and a silver and crystal pendant from the Edwardian age donated by the society's founder, Ann Currie-Bell.

The Wiltshire Times recently described a gold ring as "the star" of an auction in Wiltshire.
