The treasure hunter who located the famed loot from Spanish gallon Concepcion has paid tribute to the attractions of searching for gold in the deep blue sea.

Speaking to Mike Clary of the South-Florida Sun Sentinel, Burt Webber Junior said that his search for the mythical treasure was motivated not just by riches.

About $100 million (£50 million) in booty was lost from the ship when it was wrecked in 1641, discovered and valued at $14 million by Webber in 1978.

"It's not just about getting rich," he told the publication. "It is also history, the mystique of it all. It is just fascinating."

The treasure hunter is now 65 years old and is headed down the Miami River next week to search for the remainder of the treasure from the ship, described as among the richest in the history of sunken treasure by the expedition leader.

In related news, treasure hunting company Odyssey Marine Exploration has recently been at the centre of a high-profile wrangle with Spanish authorities over gold treasure the nation believes was found in its own waters.
