A new exhibition at the Pierre Giannadda Foundation in the Swiss canton of Valais looks back to items made from gold and other precious metals prized in ancient Egypt.

Offerings to the Egyptian Gods presents almost 70 statues, some of which are more than 4,000 years old, reports Tribune de Geneve.

Collected by the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art, the display is said to reflect the complex relationship between residents of ancient Egypt and their gods.

Pharoahs and animals such as sheep and crocodiles are represented in statue form, while a highlight is said to be a piece depicting a young princess nursing her newborn baby.

"The metal work, buried under temples amid troves of treasure, offers a fascinating glimpse into the social and cultural environment of the ancient Egyptians," the publication notes.

The exhibition runs until June 8th 2008 and is accessible by train from Martigny.
