An environmental expert has called for Canada's mining industry to expand its "fanbase".

The Ontario Mining Association reports on its website that Monte Hummel, president emeritus of the World Wildlife Fund in Canada and co-founder of Pollution Probe, told attendees at its Meet the Miners event that the industry is a key part of the country's economic life.

A number of issues were presented by Mr Hummel as central to the development of the industry surrounding mining for gold and other precious metals in Canada.

Conservationists and miners need to establish common ground in order to minimise conflicts, he said.

The expert also claimed that the mining industry could work with First Nations and conservationists to tackle poor land use by governments.

Finally, Mr Hummel called for the Mining Act to be subject to a review which could update the law for the 21st century.

A previous report by the OMA revealed that Jeremy Wyeth, association chair and senior vice-president for De Beers Canada, testified to mining's important role in First Nation community development.
