The industry surrounding the mining of gold and other commodities in Ontario is one of the province's most proud successes, an official has said.

Dwight Duncan, finance minister for Ontario said: "Mining has been one of Ontario's great recent success stories."

Mr Duncan was speaking as he revealed that the provincial government is to invest $20 million (£10 million) for geological mapping and just under $7 million for the implementation of the Ontario Mineral Development Strategy, reports the Ontario Mining Association (OMA).

On the OMA website, the association's president Chris Hodgson expressed his pleasure at the government's decision to invest in the mining sector.

Mr Hodgson also noted that the Budget has invested 'substantially in skills development, setting aside $1.5 billion over three years for the Skills to Jobs Action Plan.

Earlier this week, Monte Hummel, president emeritus of the World Wildlife Fund in Canada and co-founder of Pollution Probe, told the Meet the Miners event that the industry is important to Canada's economy, the OMA reported this week.
