A new gold coin collection celebrating soccer is being planned in South Africa, it has been reported.

With a football-themed 50 cent coin already in circulation, the South African Mint has announced that it will be expanding the theme into a collectors' series, according to Sowetan Online.

The news source added that the 2010 Soccer Coin Series is being released to commemorate the country's hosting of the Fifa World Cup in two years' time, with images of Limpop Province and Gauteng Province featured.

According to the publication, collectors may also find it worthwhile to look out for a one ounce gold coin of a soccer player in kicking a ball and one of a sportsman heading. Both were released by the mint at Coin World in 2002.

This comes as Robert Bing from OmniCoin.com comments that the internet is making it easier for collectors to pick up rare coins.
