A Reno-based coin collector has paid $414,000 (£208,203) for an 1871 gold piece from the Carson City mint to coincide with the launch of National Coin Week, it has been reported.

Nevadaappeal.com states that Rusty Goe of Southgate Coins bought the piece in Carson City, which he described as the "epicentre" the coin world for many collectors.

The city's mint produced coins using its No.1 Press between 1870 and 1885 - and again from 1889 to 1893. According to the Nevada State Museum, which now occupies the old mint building, the press was also used for coins to mark the bicentennial of the United States of America in 1976.

This year, to mark National Coin Week and the 150th anniversary of Carson City's founding, a series of events will be held at the museum, including coin displays and a demonstration of the historic press.

According to Mr Goe, the coins give people a glimpse into Nevada's history.

"They get a peek into the last quarter of the 19th century: The Comstock lode, Mark Twain, the railroads … the gold rush. These coins have preserved that history," he said.

The Carson City mint building was designed by British-born architect Alfred B Mullett, who also created the San Francisco mint and the State, War and Navy building in Washington DC.
