The Magalia area of California is playing host to a gold rush festival this weekend, a new report reveals.

According to the Paradise Post, the festivities begin this evening (April 24th) with the Miss Gold Nugget Pageant, taking place at the Paradise Performing Arts Centre.

The pageant has been held annually since 1959, when it was held on the back of a flat bed truck.

Other highlights of the celebration include the premiere of the play Uproarious Perils in Pair O'Dice or The Plunder of Sawmill Peak, while festival-goers are invited to begin their weekend with three breakfasts on Saturday morning, including a traditional Miner's Breakfast.

A Donkey Derby takes place on Saturday, followed by the Coming Up Gold parade, featuring Miss Gold Nugget, horses and motor cars.

Located in Butte County, Magalia began life after the 1849 California gold rush as a mining camp and became the site of the largest gold nugget ever discovered in 1859.
