The Ontario Mining Association (OMA) has been making sure that communities in the province do not forget the significance of mining for the local economy.

On its website, the OMA reports that its president, Chris Hodgson, recently attended two community meetings in the north-west of the region to talk about the prosperity-building potential of mining for gold and other precious metals.

Mr Hodgson attended the Northern Ontario Municipal Association conference in Thunder Bay and the Northwestern Ontario Associated Chambers of Commerce in Geraldton earlier this month.

He told his audience that First Nation communities have benefited from the regional development opportunities created by the industry, noting that growing demand for metals in nations like China, India, Russia and Brazil look set to buoy the industry in the coming years.

"The mining industry in Northwestern Ontario is an employer for the future and I hope all of you see a new headframe on the horizon in your community soon," he said.

A conference organised by the OMA, entitled Demographics, Global Markets and the Future Workforce, is taking place in June and is set to examine ways to improve the gender balance of the sector's workforce.
