Exploration drilling at the South Mines Complex (SMC) property at Kirkland Lake, Ontario, has intersected a new, high-grade zone of gold mineralisation, it has been announced.

The company working on the site, Kirkland Lake Gold, said drilling detected the new area approximately 1,200 ft west of the existing SMC zones.

It included an intersection of 376.80 g/t gold over a core length of 1.60 metres with an estimated true width of 0.9 metres.

Additional assay results included gold graded at 913.72 g/t gold over a core length of 0.60 metres with an estimated true width of 0.3 metres.

There were also intercepts graded at 71.66 g/t over 1.6 metres, 41.14 g/t gold over 0.6 metres and 27.09 g/t gold over 0.6 metres.

Stewart Carmichael, the project's chief exploration geologist, said: "It's still too early to draw any conclusions to the size of this discovery, however, this intersection is well outside of the current known extent of the SMC proves there is considerable potential for expansion of the SMC along the strike."

The SMC currently comprises over 15 zones of mineralisation around 800 ft south of former mine works in the Kirkland Lakes mining region. Past production from this area's five mines topped 21.69 million ounces of gold.
