A gold medal honouring excellent in journalism is set to be handed out at this year's Malaysian Press Awards, according to reports.

The medal, along with a cash prize of 20,000 Malaysian ringgits (equal to around £3,214) and a certificate, is given as part of the Hadiah Kajar award to honour the reporter whose work has made "big impact" on Malaysian society, newspaper the Star states.

Previous winners include Md Zaini Hassan, a senior news editor at Utusan Malaysia who uncovered ecological damage in Taman Pertanian Bukit Cahaya Seri Alam, an area of parklands near the city of Shah Alam, the site adds.

This year's awards have received 494 entries altogether, the site adds, with 13 categories available.

Commenting on the awards, Malaysian Press Institute chief executive Datuk Chamil Wariya told the newspaper: "It's a very exciting time in the world of journalism in the country right now. We're going to see a lot of changes and a more open government along with more space for different views."

The Malaysian Press Awards will be held at the One World Hotel in Kuala Lumpur.
