Wednesday, 21st May 2008 (3516 views) Last week marked Mining Week in British Columbia (BC) and the industry is going from strength to strength, a new report asserts.According to Tumbleridge News, the period from May 11th to 17th saw the role of the mining industry in providing jobs and boosting the economy celebrated. Minister of state for mining, Kevin Kreuger, announced that direct employment in the industry surrounding mining for gold and other precious metals increased from 7,345 in 2006 to 7,415 last year. The average salary for a miner also increased between 2006 and 2007, rising from $99,900 (£51,297) to $101,900. "Strong employment, good salaries and increased exploration demonstrate how mining can and will bolster and diversify local economies in communities across BC," Mr Kreuger said. The westernmost of the provinces in Canada, the largest city in BC is Vancouver, while its capital is Victoria. According to the Mining Association of BC, the industry in the province generated revenue of more than $6.3 billion in 2005.
