A recent talk in Edmonton, Alberta, recognised the value of a mining safety recognition programme being pioneered in Canada.

Founded in 1941, the John T Ryan Trophy seeks to promote good safety performance in gold mines and other mineral extraction resources, notes the Ontario Mining Association (OMA).

At Edmonton's recent Human Resources: Managing the Greatest Resource of All event, run by the Canadian Institute of Mining, the OMA's manager of communications paid homage to the award.

Peter McBride said that human performance should be celebrated through activities aimed at recognition on all levels.

"The Ryan Committee has been a vehicle to help spread the passion for safety in mining and the success of the Ryan trophies program in Canada has led to its export to other countries as tools to promote safety," Mr McBride added.

Established in 1920, the OMA's members produce gold and other precious metals, with the majority operating in northern Ontario.
