An artist renowned for her basketry technique of gold work has been awarded a $10,000 (£5,000) prize, it has emerged.

Mary Lee Hu has been named the eighth recipient of the Irving and Yvonne Twining Humber Award, reports the Seattle Times.

Held each year with the aim of recognising a female artist over the age of 60, the awards ceremony has honoured Doris Chase, Fay Jones and Ramona Solberg in the past.

This year's recipient is represented by Seattle's Facere Jewellery Art Gallery and teaches metalsmithing at the University of Washington.

London's Victoria & Albert Museum, the Smithsonian's Renwick Gallery and the Art Institute of Chicago are among the institutions that have collected her work.

The artist told Professional Jeweller Magazine in June 2000 that she has a special relationship with gold.

"I truly love working in gold. I prefer the softer look of its surface. The light seems to come from within or below the surface," she said.
