The same techniques used by the first wave of California gold prospectors are being adopted by the next generation of treasure seekers, a new report indicates.

According to the BBC, prospectors heading to the state to seek the yellow metal are panning for gold in the same way as the 49ers, shovelling rocks and dirt from the bed of the river into a bucket and shaking it to dislodge the gold.

This strategy saw the 49ers extract a collective £6 billion worth of the precious metal in the gold rush's first five years, the publication observes.

Meanwhile, the renewed interest in gold is giving California's tourism industry a boost, one local told the news provider.

Pat Narry said: "It's good for this place because it brings tourism. Tourism has always been gold!"

The Telegraph has also reported this week on the surge of fortune-hunters heading to the hills of the sunshine state.
