The Paris mint and France's national postal service are to release a special edition collection of euro coins featuring a gold 100 euro piece, according to reports.

EU Business states that the set will also include limited edition five, ten and 15 euro coins, while a second set scheduled for release in 2010 will include a 500 euro piece.

Each of the coins in the collection will include a representation of La Semeuse, a symbol of the French republic that was first used on the country's stamps in 1903.

According to the Royal Philatelic Society London, the "graceful" figure of La Semeuse, or The Sower, has been depicted in a number of styles and poses over the years but she is often shown wearing the Phrygian cap of liberty and casting - or sowing - seeds of ideas at sunrise.

France formally adopted the euro as its currency along with ten other nations in the Eurozone on January 1st 1999.

Today, 15 nations use the euro making it the single currency of some 320 million Europeans.
