Mining for gold and other resources is an activity crucial to the economy in Ontario, two of the province's cabinet ministers have asserted.

Sandra Pupatello, minister of economic development and trade joined with Michael Gravelle, minister of northern development and mines, to present at a recent Ontario Mining Association (OMA) conference.

According to the OMA website, both ministers confirmed the positive effects of the mining industry on economic life in the province at the Demographics, Global Markets and the Future Workforce event.

"Mining is providing great benefits and there is a heightened awareness of the positive impact the mining sector has on the Ontario economy," said Ms Pupatello.

Mr Gravelle said that the industry was "fixed on a productive and sustainable future".

The OMA noted that all regions of Ontario are home to mining activity, with the sector responsible for the direct employment of 20,000 residents.

Kirkland Lake Gold and Wesdome Gold Mines are among the members of the OMA.
