The marketing manager from Coutts has said the gold charity bangles auctioned at the Nelson Mandela Foundation fundraising event last week can help in the fight against Aids, according to Independent Online.

Catri Velleman said: "It's estimated that if 2.5 million bangles are sold worldwide over the next ten years, this will contribute one billion rand (£64.3 billion) to the foundation's 46664 initiative to help eradicate HIV and Aids."

Robert Coutts and Rael Kahn created the pieces of jewellery for Nelson Mandela's 90th birthday party.

Exhibited at the birthday dinner held in honour of Nelson Mandela in London were 90 24-carat gold bangles and 466 18-carat gold bangles.

One bangle fetched 5.4 million rand at the dinner's auction.

The news website said the bangles were all sourced and made locally in South Africa with the intention to help communities that live with HIV and Aids.

A concert was held in Hyde Park to celebrate the former president's birthday. Performers included Razorlight, Amy Whitehouse and Leona Lewis.

Celebrities Will Smith, Elton John and Bill Clinton were also in attendance.
