Gold-ground silks could feature in new British Museum exhibition

Thursday, 3rd July 2008 (208 views)

The British museum could soon welcome gold-ground Iranian silks as part of a new display, it has emerged.

Lavish outfits, carpets and manuscripts from the era of Shah Abbas of Iran are also planned for an exhibition next year, according the Times.

Dozens of articles telling the story of Shah Abbas' rule from 1587-1629 AD have been promised for the exhibition.

Sheila Canby, curator at the museum, told the Times she was aware of the political risk with such an exhibition but that it would give visitors a broader view of Iranian culture.

The Shah may be seen as a cruel figure, comparable with Henry VIII, as he blinded or murdered his sons, according to the report.

He also had his enemies eaten alive by cannibals and expelled Ottoman and Uzbek soldiers from Persia.

The British Museum is open every day and free to all visitors. It states that it plans bigger shows when its new exhibitions centre is built.
