Italian fashion company Prada has announced the launch of a bespoke service that crafts belts-to-order with buckles made of gold.

According to the Guardian, the service is evidence of the current taste for extravagance in the world of haute couture.

The made-to-order belts are available to both male and female customers in either leather, saffiano, crocodile or snakeskin, embellished with a buckle that consumers can choose to make gem-studded gold.

Larry Elliot, the newspaper's economic editor, compared the service to the elaborate display of luxury in evidence at the Paris couture collections.

Stefano Sassi, chief executive of Valentino, told the publication there is always going to be a market for the kind of luxury suggested by the bespoke gold belts.

"Haute couture is exclusivity, beauty, a one-to-one relationship, luxury. It's timeless," he said.

Meanwhile, Cartier recently launched its gold Charity Love bracelet, available in four different colours, each signifying a form of charity.
