A number of artworks by Damien Hirst are up for auction in September, including a calf with solid gold horns and hoofs.

Sotheby's is holding the sale, which features a number of the British art star's works and is expected to raise some £65 million, which would set a world record.

The Golden Calf is expected to fetch the largest amount at the auction, estimated to be up to £12 million.

Referring to the Biblical false idol which the Israelites were berated by Moses for worshipping, it consists of a tank in which a real calf sits, with 18-carat-gold hoofs and horns and a golden disc on its head.

Oliver Barker, senior international specialist at the auction house, told the Guardian that the new works by the artist represented his continued growth.

"Damien Hirst is still an artist punching above his weight - this is a body of work which takes him into new realms," he said.

Born in 1965, Hirst is associated with the group known as the Young British Artists, together with Tracy Emin and Sarah Lucas.
