Perth Mint is planning a significant redevelopment of its public exhibitions, it has been revealed.

The mint has been open to the public since 1992 and has featured heritage walks and demonstrations of molten gold pourings, stuff.co.nz reports.

Visitors have also had the opportunity to attempt to lift a A$250,000 (£116,900) gold bar.

And although one million people have already been attracted, chief executive officer Ed Harbuz has announced plans to phase in new exhibitions by 2011.

The website quoted him as saying that a "radical overhaul" is needed to meet modern entertainment and education standards, as little has changed in the mint since the early 1990s.

Perth Mint began operating in 1899 and now offers daily guided tours.

This week Perth-based mining company Westgold said that a gold discovery in northern Australia could create more than 200 jobs, with up to 1.5 million ounces estimated to be deposited.
