The gold used in the medals produced for the Beijing Olympics is 99.9 per cent pure, tests have shown.

According to the cultural activities director of the organising committee, 1,000 gold medals have been made for the Games, chinaview.cn reports.

And these were subjected to testing by several bodies, with each one required to contain at least six grams of 24-carat gold.

Shanghai Mint produced the coveted prizes and senior designer Luo Yohngui said those involved are "confident" they are the "best in Olympic history", adding: "To ensure that each gold medal contains at least six grams of pure gold, we weighed each one before, during and after the medal was gilded."

A total of 13.04 kg of gold was sourced from sites in Chile and Australia.

Last week Radio New Zealand reported that a heritage trail planned for New Zealand would recognise links to Chinese gold mining sites.
