Plans to mine road for goldThe news feeds on this site are independently provided by Adfero Limited © and do not represent the views or opinions of the World Gold Council. Thursday, 21st August 2008 (934 views) A man in Canada has proposed the mining of a 400m stretch of road.According to CBC News, Stuart Schmidt appeared before the council in Dawson City, which is in the western territory of Yukon, to make his case. He said that the ground under the road had never been mined, although over the years that on each side had been. Councillors welcomed the idea, which would see the road rerouted and a bypass built around the site. This would create some disruption, although mayor John Steins pointed out that while "it may not be fun having to live next to heavy equipment rumbling around", the potential value of the gold would offset short-term inconvenience. A vote will be held on the matter after Mr Schmidt presents engineer-approved designs, something he said he will have "within two weeks". Dawson City was the site of the Klondike Gold Rush in 1896, attracting nearly 100,000 visitors.
