The company behind a gold mining operation in Guatemala has hit back at criticism, stating that the project has brought significant benefits to the region.

Canada-based Goldcorp stated that it has improved both health and education facilities in Sipacapa, a town in the Western Highlands area of the country, the BBC reports.

And one of the company's senior executives, Tim Miller, stated that jobs had been created as a result, telling the news source: "We are paying on the order of $10 million (£5.36 million) to $12 million just in salaries for people in the local community and Guatemala in general."

Complaints have arisen from local people who believe the activity has caused cracks to appear in their houses, but Goldcorp hired experts to show these could not have been caused by mining.

This week Australian company Westgold revealed that a discovery near Tennant Creek would create over 200 jobs, ABC News reported.
