The 65-day long Dubai Summer Surprise gold and jewellery event has ended, reports arabianBusiness.com.

According to the emirate's jewellery retail association, the show saw jewellery and gold sales of nearly 500 million dirhams (£74.1 million).

Sales were driven by the lower price of gold, holiday shopping sprees and strong demand from the expatriate community, suggested the Dubai Gold & Jewellery Group (DGJG).

Tawhid Abdullah, DGJG's managing director, said: "Dubai is still the best place to buy high quality and variety of jewellery at the world's best prices."

The DGJG led the Glittering Surprises competition at the event. In order to be in with a chance to win, visitors to the exhibition had to spend 300 dirhams on gold or jewellery from any of the participating outlets, said AME Info.

Prizes included daily awards of 10,000 dirhams in gold and jewellery vouchers and nine weekly bonus prizes of 50,000 dirhams in vouchers.
