A new hallmarking company has been set up in Bangladesh in a bid to ensure the quality of the area's gold exports.

Bangla Gold, based in Old Dhaka, is the first company of its kind in the country, according to Bangladeshi newspaper the Daily Star.

It will put gold bars, jewellery and ornaments through a chemical analysis in order to determine purity.

The company is due to commence testing next month and will inscribe products that pass the quality test with the company's trademark.

Managing director Enamul Haque Khan told the paper: "We have got approval from the government for the work and we have set up equipment. Now what we are doing is preparing ourselves."

Measures to ensure the quality of gold are in place worldwide. Several countries, including the UK, Austria, Norway and Switzerland signed the Convention on the Control of Articles of Precious Metals in 1972.
