Tuesday, 26th August 2008 (1671 views) Numismatic News has announced that the highest graded Mint State Humbert gold coin is to go up for auction. The 1851 August Humbert $50 coin will go on sale at the Bowers and Merena Auction house in Beverly Hills on September 13th. According to the auctioneers, the gold piece could be worth up to $500,000 (£271,758). Steve Deeds, president of Bowers and Merena, said: "The rarity, the quality, the history - it all adds up to make this one spectacular coin of the calibre that even the most experienced numismatists only see a few times in a lifetime. Less than 100 of the $50 coin have been certified as Mint State by NGC and PCGS. Jeff Ambio, numismatic expert at Bowers and Merena, said that given the economic and social conditions of California at the time of it creation, the coin "should not exist". Bowers and Merena was established in 1983 as an auction house dealing in rare coin and currency sales.
