The Californian Gold Rush shipwrecks are to be investigated by a team of students led by Anne Corscadden Knox, a University of Ulster graduate.

Ms Corscadden Knox will begin searching the shipwrecks of those flocking to the gold rush after first analysing the remains of the Menemon Sanford off the Florida Keys.

The Californian Gold Rush took place between 1848 and 1855 when the precious metal was first discovered in Coloma, causing many people to flock to the area when the news spread, with some gold hunters travelling to California by sea.

Ms Corscadden Knox has also previously investigated a hulk suspected to be Blackbeard's Queen Anne's Revenge and enjoyed discovering the remains of the vessel.

"Whether it is that ship or not, it was a remarkable 18th century shipwreck with quite substantial archaeological debris," she remarked.

Recently, an open air historical dig in West Sussex was opened up to amateur archaeologists.

Exploration of the site in recent years revealed a number of exciting finds, including a rare 50 BC Gallic gold coin.
