Yard sale gold coins 'belong to previous owner'The news feeds on this site are independently provided by Adfero Limited © and do not represent the views or opinions of the World Gold Council. Wednesday, 27th August 2008 (1694 views) A judge from the British Columbia supreme court has ruled that a woman who bought a collection of 17th century gold coins from a yard sale is not the legal owner, reports North Shore News. The four Swedish coins disappeared in 1994 and were estimated to be worth around C$58,000 (£30,123) at the time - Marina Ovsenek bought the coins in 2000 for C$5. Klas-Olof Algard reported the coins as missing after he lost his briefcase carrying the pieces and offered a C$5,000 reward. Police confiscated the coins when Mrs Ovesnek's daughter, Stephanie Manning, decided to research them following her mother's death in 2004. Despite Ms Manning's appeal that her mother had bought Swedish coins legally, Judge Bruce Butler ruled that the person who had sold the coins to Mrs Ovsenek had no authority to do so and so the coins could not remain with her daughter. In other news, earlier this month an antique rupee coin in India was auctioned off for R220,000 (£2,728), reports the country's Economic Times.
