A gold mine has been discovered in Vareqan, Iran according to the head of the Industry and Mines Organisation of East Azarbayjan Province.

With possible reserves of up to 280,000, it is the biggest deposit to be found in the province.

In addition, Mohammadali Banan said the mine has an average of 7.3 per cent of gold per ton of ore.

A gold production plant will be built at the site with capabilities of producing up to 325.9 kg of gold each year.

Meanwhile, an excavation has begun at a 3,000-year-old cemetery in the north of Iran, reports the Tehran Times.

The exploration has begun as the area will soon be flooded when the Alborz Dam becomes operational.

A gold earring was found on the corpse of a 25-year-old man. This has surprised archaeologists at the site as only bronze and iron earrings have been found at previous excavations of this time period.
