Period jewellery has been making a comeback, particularly in India, according to Thaindian News.

"I think period jewellery has become increasingly collectible in the last ten years," said David Bennett, chairman of Sotheby's Jewellery in Europe and the Middle East.

He added that some pieces of period jewellery are now viewed as "fine examples of art with prices that are multiples of the intrinsic value of the jewels".

Sotheby's will be holding auctions in Hong Kong, Geneva and New York in the next few months.

A highlight of the jewellery auctions includes a rare 18-carat gold gulaband - or choker - from late 18th century Rajasthan.

According to Mr Bennett, the choker was made by jewellers Van Cleef and Arpels and was bought by Prince Johannes von Thurn and Taxis during a visit to India.

Meanwhile, artist Damien Hirst is to sell a collection of new works through Sotheby's in early September. The Golden Calf is the most expensive item to go under the hammer with an estimate of between £8 million and £12 million.
