An exploration team from Uranium Star unexpectedly discovered gold when they came across local villagers in Madagascar panning for the precious metal in a stream.

Gold flakes of up to 2-3mm were found in the water near the Tanapera property, which Uranium Star had recently acquired.

Consequently, the firm has commenced a sediment sampling programme in a bid to locate a bedrock source for the gold.

It stated that it was "pleasantly surprised" by the unanticipated gold potential of the region.

People from several local villages have been observed by employees of the company panning gold from numerous streams and recovering it from outcrop areas.

South of Fotadrevo, where the firm has established a base camp, locals have dug pits and trenches in order to search for gold nuggets and flakes.

An airborne survey will now take place to provide further information.

Madagascar is a republic with a population of 19,448,815, according to Lonely Planet.
