Apollo Gold has announced that development of its Black Fox Mine has now commenced.

The 100 per cent owned Black Fox Project is located near Timmins, Ontario and Apollo has started removal of the glacial till material which overlays the open pit, with the operation scheduled to reach completion in May 2009.

Apollo conducted a feasibility study on the Black Fox mine in April 2008 and since then has managed to secure all necessary permits and approvals, including certified closure plan approval and a permit to take water.

Mining of the open pit is scheduled to commence in March 2009 and Apollo has placed orders for long lead time mining equipment, predicting that the pit will produce 1,500 tonnes of ore per day.

R David Russell, Apollo president and chief executive, said: "Apollo Gold's Black Fox personnel are to be congratulated as they have worked diligently on this project through the various phases of exploration, reserve determination, mine design, technical studies, feasibility studies and permitting."

Based in Denver, Colorado, the gold mining and exploration company also operates the Montana Tunnels Mine with Elkhorn Tunnels and the Huizopa project in the Sierra Madres in Chihuahua, Mexico.
