Nanotechnology is playing an "increasingly important role" in many different applications, it has been claimed.

The science - in which gold is frequently used due to its unique properties - is becoming more significant for industrial, military and consumer developments, according to Dr Fred Allen from nanotechnology firm AlwaysReady.

He was speaking after his company demonstrated its Smart NanoBattery device at the New Jersey Technology Council Nanotechnology Prototype Showcase in the US.

Dr Allen - who is the president and chief executive officer of the firm - led a panel discussion on how to bridge the gap between the prototype stage and commercialisation.

He remarked: "AlwaysReady is focused on delivering nano-enabled prototypes and products as rapidly as we can."

Recently, an unusual method of using gold to produce high-power batteries was highlighted by the European Science Foundation.

Scientists used the natural multiplying ability of a virus to arrange gold nanowires in a way that was capable of generating high amounts of energy.
