Friday, 21st November 2008 (1019 views) A gold and enamel Order of St George Cross is to be featured in the upcoming Russian Works of Art sale at UK auctioneers Christie's.The breast badge, which comes with a gold fitted case, is circa 1877 and is expected to fetch up to £60,000 at the London sale. It is part of Russian Art Week, which is taking place across the British capital. The cross belonged to the Grand Duke Nicholas Nikolaevich the Younger, who died in 1929. His brother Piotr Nikolaevich then inherited the item and passed it on to his son - Prince Roman Petrovich - and it was subsequently handed down the generations to its present owner. The Order of St George was founded in 1769 by Empress Catherine II as a military award for officers that displayed outstanding gallantry on the battlefield. Fellow London auction house Bonhams is also selling a collection of fine Russian art as part of the events.
