24-c gold coin created by US MintThe news feeds on this site are independently provided by Adfero Limited © and do not represent the views or opinions of the World Gold Council. Tuesday, 25th November 2008 (806 views) The US mint has produced a collector's item gold $20 coin (£13.02), 101 years after the idea was first conceived.Following calls from then president Theodore Roosevelt for a "renaissance" in American coinage involving more attractive designs, the gold coin was designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens in 1907 and christened the Double Eagle. Although it could not be mass produced using the technology of the day, the US mint this week pressed its first coins using the Saint-Gaudens design. The first one will be displayed in the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of American History, while the rest - a limited edition production - will be sold to collectors in January at a price linked to the cost of gold bullion at that time. Another gold coin collection up for sale will be selling in Britain next month. Historic coins from India, including 34 gold ones, will be up for sale at specialist auctioneers Morton & Eden in London on December 11th and 12th, News-Antique.com reports.
