Thursday, 18th December 2008 (1372 views) Bulgarian National Bank has announced the issue of a new 2008 commemorative gold coin honouring Saint Tsar Boris I.The ninth-century Bulgarian ruler ordered the nation to be baptised and his canonical image is featured on the reverse of the new coin, with the words Sv Tsar Boris I Pokrustitel (St Tsar Boris I the Baptiser) around its rim. Known as Boris the Baptiser, the king converted to Christianity and instructed the rest of Bulgaria to do so, making it a compulsory religion and eventually retired from the throne to become a monk. The 1.55g 20 leva coin of .999/1000 gold has a diameter of 13.92mm and a total of 8,000 of the commemorative issue have been minted. Priced at 100 leva, the coin was designed by Krassimir Anguelov, Borislav Kyosev and Razvigor Kolev. Meanwhile, a series of gold treasures from Bulgaria are currently on show at the National History Museum in Sofia as part of an exhibition to celebrate the centenary of the country's independence.
