Wednesday, 24th December 2008 (860 views) A mysterious benefactor who dropped a rare gold coin into a charity's collection tin in the US wishes to remain anonymous.Representatives of the Salvation Army wanted to track down the person who put the 1915 Austrian ducat coin into one of their red kettles in Knoxville. But the donor contacted the charity and stated that he or she wishes to remain anonymous, saying: "I really just wanted to create a stir and draw some attention to The Salvation Army by making an unusual donation." The gold coin is estimated to be worth approximately $100 (£68) to $600. Meanwhile, over 250 Byzantine gold coins have been unearthed by archaeologists working on a car park in Jerusalem. The Israel Antiquities Authority found the hoard during an exercise being carried out at the Giv'ati car park near the walls around Jerusalem National Park. They are believed to have been minted at the beginning of the reign of the Byzantine emperor Heraclius.
