Thursday, 22nd January 2009 (3075 views) A jewellery auction in Qatar's capital city of Doha has helped raise funds for the people of Gaza. The local Arabic daily newspaper Arrayah said that a wide variety of precious jewellery was purchased by women at the event, which was organised by the Darul Hikmah centre, Gulf Times reports. Included in the auction was a 97g 24-c gold chain, which sold for QR40,000 (£7,981) after bidding opened at QR8,000. And an 18-c gold chain, hailed as the "Jewel of Gaza", had a starting price of QR15,000 but eventually sold for QR135,000. In related news, a gold ring that once belonged to Charles Dickens is to be auctioned next month and is expected to fetch between £25,000 and £35,000. The ring, which bears the inscription 'Alfred Tennyson to Charles Dickens 1854', was presented to Dickens by the former poet laureate and is believed to be evidence that Dickens had a secret child with Georgina Hogarth, his sister-in-law and housekeeper.
