A new 24-c gold coin replicating a design from the early 1900s and weighing one ounce is now available, the US Mint has announced.

The currency, which carries a price of $1,189 (£737), is the recreation of a coin that was intended for release in 1907 but was never circulated to the public.

Known as the 2009 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle Gold Coin, it is currently available in the Mint's online catalogue and features Liberty on one side and a flying eagle on the reverse.

"The original 1907 Double Eagle is considered by many to be the most beautiful coin ever produced in the United States," the Mint noted, adding that delivery of the piece may take up to nine months depending on the availability of blank gold.

Coins are also being issued to mark the forthcoming Year of the Ox, with Numis Master reporting that currency of various denominations will be issued by PandaAmerica in order to mark the event.
