A boy in Texas has returned a gold college class ring to its owner after more than 20 years.

The ring was lost during the 1980s by Franklin Weeks, now 95, while he was putting new playground equipment in for his church, according to the Lufkin daily News.

Luke and Sam Lytle found the ring buried around six inches under the ground while they were testing out their new metal detector at the church playground in Diboll, Texas.

Traced to Mr Weeks using the initials engraved inside, the boys, aged 12 and eight, have now reunited the ring with its owner, who received it when he graduated in 1937 from Stephen F Austin State Teachers College.

A metal detector enthusiast in Britain recently uncovered a hoard of 824 Iron Age gold coins in a field near Wickham Market in Suffolk that were minted by the Iceni tribe, predecessors of ancient queen Boudicca.
