Wednesday, 28th January 2009 (960 views) Nanotechnology could offer a solution to the current economic downturn in the US, it has been claimed.According to the newly-created Nano World Headquarters, development of nanotechnology, which often involves the use of gold, may help improve energy innovation and create jobs in the country. The technology is currently being used in a number of areas, including developing a cure for cancer, boosting the efficiency of the US power grid and powering electric cars. Valerie Moore, executive director of the Houston, Texas-based centre, explained that the facility enables chemistry, physics, biology and engineering to be combined to aid in the "development and commercialisation" of nanotechnology. "We are pleased that all of these elements come together at the Nano World Headquarters, promising unprecedented progress," she remarked. And Mayor of Pearland, Texas Tom Reid also voiced his support for the technology, noting that "it will go a long way in strengthening [the state's] economic vibrancy". Nanowerk recently revealed that gold is currently being used in the development of alternative uses for collagen as part of nanoparticle research at California State University.
